MENTOR OF THE MONTH

Dr. Joy McCarthy, M.D. FRCP(C)

Why is Dr. McCarthy the Successful Mentor of the Month for November?

Dr. Joy McCarthy is the Division Chief of Medical Oncology within the Cancer Care Program of Eastern Health, St. John’s, NL. She is a Clinical Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her areas of interest include breast, genitourinary and head and neck cancer. She is a Board Member of Kidney Cancer Canada and The Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute.

Dr. McCarthy is an amazing role model for many oncologists. Dr. Erin Powell, a colleague of Dr. McCarthy, has nominated her for the month of November. She explains her excellence below:

"Joy is a Medical Oncologist here at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Center. Her primary career focus is patient care and she has remained dedicated to her patients despite many other demands that have been placed on her. She has recently become the Division Chief of Medical Oncology and was previously the Director of Clinical Trials. She teaches extensively at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also frequently does teaching for nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals. Above all, Joy is the doting mother of three beautiful children and loves spending time with her children and husband. She is also an avid runner and has done an incredible job of balancing work, home and fun."

Congratulations Dr. McCarthy on your success. We thank you so much for being a part of the WinC community and inspiring current and future clinicians.

End work-life balance anxiety: How to make a change

By: HARVEY SCHACHTER
Special to The Globe and Mail
Published Thursday, Sep. 27 2012

Overview

University of Victoria English Professor Janelle Jenstad prepared to make the best use of her coming summer break from teaching and came across Globe Careers’ online Balance scorecard and questionnaire, and decided to give it whirl.

As she edged through the step-by-step questions about her work-life balance, it crystallized her thinking, prodding her to focus on the most important factors and pick between them on what to emphasize in each of the next thee months. Now, her summer over and in retrospect quite successful, she plans to share the questionnaire with her new graduate students in the time management class she always gives to those recruits as they flow from the relatively structured life of undergraduates to the more unstructured, and thus potentially thorny, life of a graduate student.
